5 things I wish I knew when I was hiring a wedding photographer

When I was planning my wedding in 2018, looking for a wedding photographer was one of the most overwhelming decisions. There are so many talented photographers out there and I did not know the first thing about how to narrow down who I should be talking to. Since then, I have learned a lot! Not only did I gain experience from my own wedding, I have shot other weddings, and studied under some of the best wedding photographers from Canada and the USA. So, I wanted to share a few of the things I wish I had known back when I was planning my wedding in the hopes that they can help you in your wedding planning journey.

  1. Your photographer will be with you the most on your wedding day

I put this as the first consideration because I think it is so important for people to understand. You want to hire someone who you will want to be around on your wedding day. Your photographer will most likely be with you from the moment you start getting ready to the end of the night. Make sure they are someone who will bring the vibe you are looking for. Do you want someone to fade into the background? Are you looking for someone who is a bit more hands on? Get to know your photographer’s approach to their wedding day coverage by asking them. Having a conversation with any prospective photographers will give you the opportunity to see if they are the right fit.

  1. Get to know a photographer’s style before you hire them.

Speaking of finding the right fit, make sure you understand a photographer’s style before you hire them. Style can be everything from the colour tone of their pictures to the posing you see in their pictures. Look at their social media and website before reaching out to make sure they have the style you like. For example, you probably shouldn’t contact someone who has a warm, earthy style if you want bright & airy pictures. And if you aren’t sure what style you like, look on pinterest and instagram to see what pictures you are drawn to and see how the photographers describe their work. It won’t take long for you to notice a trend in what images you are drawn to.

  1. You get what you pay for.

Photographers set their pricing based on their overhead costs, the time that goes into a job, and how in demand they are. Some typical costs that photographers have are equipment (camera gear, computer, harddrives, etc.), maintenance, travel and accommodations, software, and insurance. The time that goes into a wedding includes the lead-up support, preparation work, day-of coverage, editing, and post event work, such as album designing and order fulfillments. If a photographer offers an exceptional client experience, has a high attention to detail, and is in high-demand, their costs will be at a premium. This is not to say that there aren’t great photographers at lower price points, but if they are at a lower price point, it is important to understand why – where are they saving on their costs and how will that impact you?

  1. Your photographer can be an amazing resource to you leading up to the wedding.

The chances are your photographer knows a lot about weddings. This can be a tremendous help to you when it comes to planning your wedding day timeline. They can tell you how much time you need for portraits, tell you the best times of day for pictures, help you plan your picture locations and so much more. Tap into the expertise of your photographer! Not every photographer will go out of their way to guide you with your wedding planning journey, but almost every photographer will be happy to give advice if you ask for it.

  1. The right photographer will be there for you for all your life’s milestones.

There is a good chance that if you find a photographer who you truly connect with, they will end up being your photographer for life. They will be the person you call when you want to get pictures of life’s special precious moments, such as anniversaries, vow renewals, pregnancy, having children, family events, etc. So if you value photography in your life, it is worth finding someone who will be a positive presence on your wedding day and in your life.

I hope these considerations and tips help you as you move forward with planning your special day! Trust me, when you find the right photographer, you will know it – their work will inspire you and there will be no doubt in your mind. So take your time and trust yourself.

If you have any questions, I’m always happy to help so please reach out.

Take care and good luck!
